Separate the questions that need attention
- Your immediate tax concern.
- A period or source already known.
- An uncertainty to discuss openly.
- An explained purpose for additional information.
Keep a source nearby where available and note the tax period you know. Separate uncertainty about the debt from difficulty paying it. If a date or figure is missing, say so instead of inventing one. Account transcripts can be useful sources, and the IRS provides guidance on obtaining them.
Ask which additional record is relevant and how it would be used. Confirm a private sharing route and intended recipient before supplying sensitive information. Later services should have explained costs, tasks, and communication. A prepared list is only a conversation aid; actual assessment and any account action require the relevant facts and process.
